FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Dry ice blasting is an industrial cleaning method that uses compressed air to accelerate solid CO₂ pellets at high speeds to clean surfaces. Upon impact, the pellets sublimate (turn directly into gas), effectively lifting contaminants without leaving any residue behind and causing no damage.

The cleaning action comes from three key effects: kinetic energy from the pellet impact, a thermal shock that cracks the bond between the contaminant and the surface, and rapid gas expansion that lifts the debris away.

Yes. Dry ice blasting is non-conductive and moisture-free, making it ideal for cleaning electrical components, circuit boards, motors, and wiring without the risk of short-circuiting or corrosion.

Dry ice blasting is safe for most surfaces, including metal, plastic, glass, rubber, wood, and even delicate moulds. It can clean machinery, tools, conveyor belts, switchboards and more without surface damage.

Common industries include:

  • Mining/Resources
  • Electrical & Power
  • Food manufacturing
  • Automotive
  • Defense/Aerospace
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Manufacturing – Plastics & Rubber
  • Printing
  • Marine
  • Foundries

No. Dry ice sublimates on contact, turning into carbon dioxide gas and leaving no secondary waste. Only the removed contaminant remains.

Yes. It uses recycled CO₂, requires no chemicals or solvents, and produces no wastewater or hazardous residue—making it a green cleaning solution.

No. Dry ice blasting is non-abrasive and much gentler on surfaces, which helps preserve sensitive equipment and extends asset life.

Yes. It can remove certain paints, coatings, and light surface rust depending on the settings used. For thicker coatings or corrosion, other abrasive blasting methods may be better suited and we can offer mixed media blasting for this.

Absolutely. Dry ice blasting is FDA and USDA approved for use in food facilities. It effectively removes grease, residue, mould, and bacteria without chemicals or water.

Minimal to none. Since the process is dry and leaves no residue, equipment can often be used immediately after cleaning.

Dry ice blasting does produce noise from the compressed air system—typically similar to other industrial cleaning equipment. Hearing protection is recommended during operation.

Dry ice is made by compressing and cooling CO₂ gas until it liquefies. It is then de-pressurised to produce solid CO₂ snow, which is compressed into pellets.

Yes. At Vortex, we offer flexible rental options along with training so your team can operate the machine safely and effectively on-site.

Yes. We provide full training for both machine operation and safety procedures, ensuring your team gets the most out of the equipment.

Yes. It can be used indoors or outdoors, provided there is adequate ventilation and access to compressed air. Outdoors is ideal for larger equipment or site-based work.

While the initial cost may be higher than traditional cleaning methods, it offers long-term savings through reduced downtime, labour, and equipment wear.

Dry ice blasting is dry, chemical-free, ready to paint and non-abrasive—unlike pressure washing, which uses large volumes of water and may not be safe for sensitive equipment.

Minimal prep is required. We just need access to the equipment. For electrical systems, isolation may be needed. We’ll guide you through the process beforehand.
